Knitting in West Iceland

Knitting is very popular in Iceland, you see people in hand knitted Icelandic sweaters everywhere and knitting clubs can be found all over the country. West Iceland is the perfect destination for knitting, because of the long-established knitting tradition in the area. This, in combination with sightseeing in the beautiful nature West Iceland has to offer will make this trip an unforgettable experience. On a clear winter evening you might also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the magnificent northern lights.

Besides knitting, we will explore the beautiful nature West Iceland has to offer and visit interesting places, mostly related to the Icelandic wool. We will learn about the colouring of yarn with dye made of Icelandic plants, have a workshop in spinning wool and learn about the Icelandic goat and wool from the goats. We also visit a farmer’s market and taste products from local farmers. Furthermore, we will learn about the settlement of Iceland and the Sagas at the Settlement Centre.

Use your free time to take a stroll around the town of Borgarnes, visit the outdoor swimming pool with its steam bath and hot tubs, and take a look around in the (small) shopping centre and the local yarn shop!

Knitting & Adventures

During this eight day trip to Iceland you’ll attend a four day knitting course taught in the Icelandic Country Hotel Fljótshlíð, where the guests also get the opportunity to experience Icelandic Nature, learn about Icelandic Knitting traditions and enjoy excellent local food.

During the stay in Hotel Fljótshlíð your hosts will be sure to alert you if northern lights can be seen in the clear winter sky as the hotel has a great location, far away from the lights of the city, for viewing the great northern lights.

For some diversity you’ll take adventurous super jeep day excursions to well-known sights around the Hotel such as highland oasis Þórsmörk, which lies in the shadow of the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. You visit the small Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Exhibition and see Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Last but not least you will see the Golden Circle with stops at the Geysers hot spring and the Gullfoss waterfall.

Focus on Birds

A guided photo tour by a professional photo guide through North Iceland, the richest birding area in Iceland, both in terms of number of species and the abundance of birds. The best time for bird watching is from middle of May to middle of June. Most of the breeding birds can still be found in the area in July, although many of them are then rather reclusive because of the moulting period.
This tour will probably yield between 70 and 75 species of birds. We will see Brunnich’s Guillemots, Barrow’s Goldeneyes and Harlequins. We can almost promise Gyr Falcon on the way and most likely some surprise birds will be found in the trip, to name some quite likely would be Steller’s Eider, American Wigeon and King Eider.
