We start the day by visiting the most interesting historic and geographic place in Iceland, Þingvellir, to be the first place to receive UNESCO’s nomination of world heritage. Here we can eyewitness the rift splitting the American and European continents. Thereafter we set the course to the amazing natural sights of waterfall Gullfoss and the spouting geyser, Strokkur.
You will also visit the family run greenhouse- and horse farm at Friðheimar, where you will explore the greenhouse, taste the products, visit the horse stables and finally have lunch made from the ingredients grown on site.
Having visited these places we drive along the south coast of Iceland to the farm- guesthouse Hrífunes between the villages Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The host will greet you with a welcoming home cooked dinner. Relaxing evening and northern light hunt - if weather allows.
Day 3, 30 December: Skaftafell National Park and the Glacier Lagoon
After a good breakfast we drive further east to National Park Skaftafell. Skaftafell is a wooded area surrounded by expanses of sand desert deposited by glacial rivers and a massive glacier named Vatnajökull. Here we have the oppurtunity to go on an easy glacier walk and search for ice caves. From Skaftafell we continue to the famous glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón with its floating icebergs calving from majestic glacier Vatnajökull.
We return to our cozy accommodation in the late afternoon, where we relax and enjoy another great dinner prepared by our host. Northern light hunt if weather allows.
