If you want to experience true Icelandic Winter, Akureyri is the right place. It‘s more likely that the landscape is covered in snow there than it is in Reykjavík. On a clear night, the chances of seeing the northern lights are quite high. Even if the night sky in Akureyri isn‘t clear, you don‘t have to drive far, just into the next valley, where completely different weather conditions apply.
Akureyri is the largest town outside the greater Reykjavík Area with a population of about 18.000 inhabitants. Akureyri is located in the north-east of Iceland, in one of Iceland‘s longest fjords, surrounded by mountains reaching 1000-1500m (3,280-4,921ft) above sea level.
You‘ll find a wide selection of activities and interesting places in and near Akureyri e.g. notable museums, the world‘s most northerly botanic garden, large outdoor swimming pools and a great skiing area, just to name a few. There is an excellent range of restaurants, many of which specialise in local food.
Akureyri is also a good base for many of Iceland‘s most beautiful natural wonders such as the waterfalls Goðafoss and Dettifoss as well as the volcanic areas around Lake Mývatn.
