Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival at Keflavík International Airport, you pick up your pre-booked rental car. If you arrive in the morning or afternoon, you might want to stop by at the Blue Lagoon on your way into the city of Reykjavík.
If arriving late, you will find your accommodation near the airport.
Day 2: National Park Þingvellir, Geysers & Gullfoss Waterfall
Leave the city in the morning for the UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park Þingvellir. Here you should take a walk through the Almannagjá rift and visit the old parliament site.
From here your journey takes you through the village of Laugarvatn to the geysers, where you will see the very active hot spring Strokkur erupting every five minutes or so.
From Geysir it’s only about a 10-minute drive to the so-called golden waterfall, Gullfoss. Accommodation in the vicinity.
Day 3: Þjórsárdalur Valley & Hekla Volcano
In the Þjórsárdalur Valley, you will come across the beautiful waterfall Hjálparfoss and you might want to stop at Stöng, an excavated farm that was buried under ash in the Hekla volcanic eruption in the year 1104 before visiting the reconstruction of the farm, Þjóðveldisbær, located close to Stöng.
Then drive along the foot of the volcano Hekla through a desert-like landscape of pumice to your accommodation near the south coast.
Day 4: Waterfalls & Black Coast of the South
Only a short drive away from the village of Hvolsvöllur you reach the waterfall Seljalandsfoss; a walk behind the waterfall is an unforgettable experience.
After a drive further eastwards to Skógar the beautiful waterfall Skógafoss awaits you. There we also recommend a visit to the local folk- and transport museum.
A detour towards the south coast, either to the bird cliffs of Dyrhólaey or Reynisfjara with its basalt columns, might be of interest.
Your journey next takes you through the village of Vík, the desert-like black sands of Mýrdalssandur, the lava landscapes of Eldhraun and onwards to the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, where you will find your accommodation for the next two nights.
Day 5: Skaftafell, Svartifoss Waterfall & Glacier Lagoon
Spend the day in the National Park, Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður. We recommend the easy walk to the Svartifoss waterfall in Skaftafell, which is surrounded by monumental basalt columns.
The approximately hour-long drive from Skaftafell to the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon is definitely worth it. Simply take a walk along the shore of the lagoon or go on a boat trip amidst the drifting icebergs. You have a good chance of spotting seals in the lagoon and near the coast.
Day 6: The South Coast
Heading back along the south coast you might want to make a right turn just before entering the village Vík, to Þakgil, a beautiful canyon surrounded by terrific mountains.
If you missed any highlights or activities on your way towards Vatnajökull glacier you can make good use of your time and visit them today. Your accommodation lies in the vicinity of the town Selfoss.
Day 7: Reykjavík
Having crossed the Hellisheiði mountain pass you have the opportunity to visit the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant to learn about how geothermal energy is harnessed in Iceland. After that, it is only a short drive to Reykjavík, where you have the afternoon at your disposal.
Day 8: Departure
The time of departure will determine your plans for the day. If you leave in the late afternoon or the evening, you will have time to explore Reykjavík and stop by at the Blue Lagoon on your way to the airport.
If your flight leaves in the early morning you will have to leave Reykjavík early for the airport, where you return your rental car before departure.
You can also add a few days, switch from a normal rental car to a 4WD and head to the highlands of Iceland.
