Landscape and Portrait Photography with Jens Klettenheimer
23 August – 1 September, 2014

An inspirational photo workshop combining best of both worlds: most beautiful landscapes, waterfalls and hidden gems in South-West Iceland enriched with natural light people photography with local models.

End of August is the perfect time to take breathtaking landscape photos in Iceland: with the soft light during sunrise (around 5:45 am) and sunset (around 9 pm) – dusk and dawn will last for 60 minutes each – we find ideal conditions for photography!

The models we will be working with will contribute to the special “Iceland feeling” that will arise during our trip: the day focusing on people photography will become an unforgettable highlight of our workshop!

Day 2, 24 August, 2014:

We follow the south coast from Reykjavík to our accommodation in the Mýrdalur valley. We stop at the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss as well as in Seljavellir, where we take an easy hike to a very unique open-air pool, built in 1923.

If we are lucky enough to catch low tide we also stop to photograph the rock formations at Holtsós.

2 nights at the farm hotel Steig.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 3, 25 August, 2014:

We return to Skógar to take a short hike to the Kvernufoss waterfall before we take a detour to the coast to photograph an airplane wreck half buried in the black sand.

Afterwards we drive to the black sand beach at the bird cliff Dyrhólaey (please note that the bird life is not as rich in the early summer) and if we have time we’ll also stop by Reynisfjara to see the magnificent basalt columns.

On our way through Vík village, we’ll catch the rock formations Reynisdrangar from a different angle.

Return to our accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 4, 26 August, 2014:

Today we‘ll leave the Mýrdalur area behind us and drive further east. In the middle of the lava field Eldhraun, we‘ll leave the asphalted ring road and drive towards the highland on the mountain road Fjallabak nyrðra (Behind the mountains) to the gorge Eldgjá (Fire-gorge) and further into the colourful rhyolite area of Landmannalaugar.

From Landmannalaugar we follow the Dómatalur route towards the Hekla volcano, where we find the very photogenic Þjófafoss waterfall (Thief‘s waterfall).

3 nights at Guesthouse Lambastaðir, near Selfoss.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 5, 27 August, 2014:

Today we visit the geysers as well as the waterfalls Gullfoss and Brúarfoss.

We take a three hour long hike to the less known but very impressive Brúarfoss waterfall. On the way we also see several other charming waterfalls. Gullfoss, on the other hand, is one of Icelands best known and most beautiful waterfalls.

We also visit the geysir area, where the very active geyser Strokkur erupts about every 5 minutes or so.

Return to the accommodation near Selfoss in the afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 6, 28 August, 2014:

We make our way to the south coast of the Reykjanes peninsula to the boiling hot mud springs of Krísuvík and the Lake Kleifarvatn. Here we meet one or two Icelandic photo models and spend the larger part of the day photographing them in the natural surroundings after a theoretical introduction to model photography.

(All participants will receive a “Model Release” which allows the non-commercial usage of all taken photos of the models.)

Return to the accommodation near Selfoss in the afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 7, 29 August, 2014:

After breakfast we make our way to the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the western part of Iceland. On our way we drive through the national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site Þingvellir, where we photograph the Öxaráfoss waterfall amongst other things.

Our accommodation is located on the north coast of Snæfellsnes, in the picturesque fishing village Grundarfjörður, at the foot of the extremely photogenic Mt. Kirkjufell.

1 night at Hotel Framnes.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 8, 30 August, 2014:

Today we drive around the Snæfellsjökull glacier, making several stops on the way amongst others at the tiny fishing village Arnarstapi and by the old black wooden church in Búðir.

1 night at the Guesthouse Langaholt on the south coast of the peninsula.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch and Dinner.

Day 9, 31 August, 2014:

There we can see the mighty hot water spring Deildartunguhver and the waterfalls Hraunfossar (Lava falls) and Barnafoss (Children‘s fall). Your photographic guide on this tour will be Jens Klettenheimer, a very experienced professional photographer from Germany who is a true Iceland expert: he visited Iceland nine times since 2008, and he will share his insights with you by including some less well known yet very attractive photo locations you don’t necessarily find in other tours.

Next to being an enthusiastic landscape photographer, Jens’ second big passion is about people photography. Since several years he conducts workshops on people photography in Germany. These workshops have an excellent reputation and had been fully booked in 2013 with more than 50% of the seats taken by returning customers.

What makes this workshop really special is the unique combination of landscape and people photography: while the focus is clearly on Icelandic landscape and nature photography, the workshop participants will – after a theoretical instruction – also spend one day focusing on available light people photography with local Icelandic models.
