The fairy-tale starts from the moment the guide picks you up in Reykjavik. We take you to popular tourist attractions, tell you stories about the Vikings, trolls and the hidden people, stay at a farm and visit the animals, take short hike in Reykjadalur where you get to take bath in the nature, sleep in a remote hut and so on. This tour is full of exciting things to do with the whole family during the Winter. We try to spend as short time as possible inside the super-van and spend more time outside in the nature. We include all necessary equipment, accommodation, activities and meals in our program......meaning we take care of you from the start to the end!

On the Family Fairytale – Winter in South Iceland you will be spending a lot of time outside during the day so please dress like you are on a skiing holiday.

Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at Keflavík Airport and transfer to your hotel in Reykjavík.
Day 2: Þingvellir National Park – Laugarvatn – Geysir – Gullfoss
Our professional driver guide will pick you up in the morning at your accommodation in Reykjavik. Our family fairy tale starts with a visit and a walk around the National Park Þingvellir, were the Icelandic Vikings used to get together and finally establishing the oldest parliament in the world. Your guide will walk with you around the main sights of the park and tell you some enjoyable stories about the famous Vikings. Here it is also visible how the European and the American tectonic plates are drifting apart, the park is located on the no man’s land between the two plates!
We then visit Lake Laugarvatn and the famous Geysir Hot Spring area. At Geysir we watch the very active Strokkur hot spring blow every 5-10 min. From there we drive a short distance to enjoy the view over the beautiful Gullfoss Waterfall.
On our way to our accommodation in the afternoon we make a small detour to a man-made nature bath and take a dip in the warm water. Remember to pack your swimsuit and towel in your hand luggage! You do not want to miss out on this unique experience.
During your week stay in the countryside you have the opportunity in the right conditions to view the northern lights dancing in the evening sky. If there are good conditions then it is absolutely essential to dress up in warm clothes and lay down on the ground outside to watch these amazing lights above you. Great experience for all ages!
Activity during the day: Easy walking, bathing in a nature bath
Day 3: Horse riding – Afternoon hike and nature bath
After breakfast you have the chance to relax or go for a horse riding tour to get really familiar with the Icelandic horse. The riding tour can be between 1-3 hours in length, it is up to you to decide, a visit to the horse stables is also possible.
After lunch at the farm it is time to visit the unique geothermal plant at Hellisheiði. The plant uses geothermal heat to create electricity and it also transports hot water to the Icelandic homes. At the plant you get to experience how it is to have the ground shake beneath you in an earthquake simulator, very exciting!
Afterwards you go for a nice hike into Reykjadalur Valley above Hveragerði hot spring village. In Reykjadalur “valley of smoke” you get to experience another kind of a nature bath in Iceland by jumping into a hot river in the middle of nowhere. Authentic and essential experience! Like the evening before you have dinner at the farm.
Activity during the day: horse riding (optional), visit a geothermal plant and experience an earthquake in a simulator, easy hiking, bathing in a hot river.
Day 4: In the steps of the Vikings – Seljalandsfoss - Þórsmörk
In the morning you say goodbye to our hosts and head east to the remote and secluded Þórsmörk Valley. Along the main road we stop at the Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur and find ourselves transported back in time. Let’s experience the dramatic and fascinating story of the Viking age together with your guide.
Before entering the rough roads to Þórsmörk we stop at the astonishing Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, we will experience the waterfall up close and walk behind it, don´t forget your waterproof jacket and pants.
Þórsmörk is a unique wooded valley that lies sheltered between two glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. It is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and contrast, gentle woodlands and rugged glaciers. The eruptions in Fimmvörðuháls and Eyjafjallajökull glacier in 2010 were small on Icelandic scale but they had a tremendous effect on most air traffic in the world due to the ashes that got airborne. Your guide will tell you all about the eruption and the consequences it had on the surrounding area and the farmers living underneath the volcano.
Activity during the day: Visit a Viking Museum, walk behind a waterfall, adventure 4x4 driving, cross un-bridged rivers, walking
Day 5: Day in Þórsmörk
This day will be spent exploring the adventurous Þórsmörk valley better on foot. If we have plenty of snow then we might build an igloo for our coffee break. Your guide will also tell you all about the Icelandic superstition on hidden people and trolls that live amongst us in rocks, mountains and caves all around Iceland. If you are lucky you can spot them all around you in the nature. In the evening we enjoy a Troll themed meal together.

Day 6: South Coast –Skógafoss – Dyrhólaey – Vík Village – Reynisdrangar
Now it is time to head back to the main road and travel east along the south coast. You will be driving through the area just below Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Along the way you explore the spectacular waterfall Skógafoss, where you get the opportunity to hike to the top of the waterfall and further up along the river in beautiful surroundings of many smaller waterfalls. From here it is time to visit the memorable black beaches down by the Atlantic Ocean and the strange rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar Troll cliffs. In the afternoon you walk to the top of Hjörleifshöfði Cape, which is located in the middle of the sand stretch Mýrdalssandur. From the top you have fantastic view over the coastline and the highlands with its many glaciers. Arrive in the afternoon to your warm and cosy accommodation and enjoy a gourmet family meal prepared by your host at Hrífunes.
Activity during the day: Light hiking, black beach driving, nature exploring.
Day 7: Skaftafell National Park – Glacier Lagoon – Glacier Walk
This day will be dedicated to stunning nature paradise Skaftafell National Park. You visit numerous glacier tongues and go for a family friendly glacier walk with a local guide. If you are lucky then you get to visit an ice cave made by nature itself.
You also visit the spectacular glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Since 1950 the glacier tongue has retreated and a lagoon, gradually increasing in area, was created. The edge of the glacier calves into the lagoon and icebergs of different sizes are created. The lagoon is the deepest lake in Iceland. It is unforgettable to admire the natural ice sculptures and the blue green colour of the ice floating on the water. You might also see the occasional seal swim around or relaxing on one of the icebergs. A number of adventure films have been shot at Jökulsárlón, including Beowulf, Tomb Raider, two James Bond movies and Batman Begins.
On our way back to Hrífunes we stop in some astonishing moss-grown lava fields and you walk around the mysterious Dverghamrar cliffs and see the dwelling place of some hidden people. In the evening you enjoy your good-bye dinner at Hrífunes.
Activity during the day: Walking and nature exploring in Skaftafell National Park, glacier walk, visit the Glacier Lagoon with floating icebergs
Day 8: South Coast – Caving – Hellisheiði Geothermal Plant – City Tour
After breakfast you will get your things together and drive back to Reykjavík along the south coast. On the way you make a stop by a distinctive lava tube cave to explore the mysterious underworlds. Everyone gear up with helmets and lights and follow the guide through the unique lava landscape of the underground.
Upon arrival in Reykjavík you get a short city sightseeing with your guide before getting to your accommodation.
