Arrival at Keflavík Airport and transfer to your hotel in Reykjavík.
Day 2: Þingvellir National Park – Laugarvatn – Geysir – Gullfoss
Our professional driver guide will pick you up in the morning at your accommodation in Reykjavík. The family fairy-tale starts with a visit and a walk around the National Park Þingvellir, were the Icelandic Vikings used to get together and finally establishing the oldest parliament in the world. Your guide will walk with you around the main sights of the park and tell you some enjoyable stories about the famous Vikings.
It is also visible how the European and the American tectonic plates are drifting apart in Þingvellir. You might say that the park is located on the no man’s land between the two plates!
Continue to Lake Laugarvatn and visit the new and improved steam bath and pool area down by the lake. At the sauna they use the heat and steam from a natural hot spring which is located by the lake shore. This hot spring also creates a nice bathing opportunity in the lukewarm lake.
We proceed to the famous Geysir Hot Spring area and watch the very active Strokkur hot spring blow every 5-10 min. From there we drive a short distance to enjoy the view over the beautiful Gullfoss Waterfall. Late afternoon arrival to your accommodation at Hestheimar farm.
Day 3: Horse Riding – afternoon hike and nature bath
After breakfast you will join the family at Hestheimar for their morning duties at the farm. This way you get to meet the many horses and also help to feed them. During a riding tour you will get familiar with the Icelandic horse and its character.
After lunch we head to Hveragerði and take our time to explore the hot springs in the middle of the village. Then, we go for a nice hike into Reykjadalur Valley above the village. In Reykjadalur “valley of smoke” you get to experience your first real nature bath in Iceland by jumping into a hot river in the middle of nowhere. Great and unique experience! Like the evening before you will have dinner at the guesthouse.
Day 4: In the steps of the Vikings – Seljalandsfoss - Þórsmörk
In the morning you head east to the remote and secluded Þórsmörk Valley. Þórsmörk is a unique wooded valley that lies sheltered between two glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. It is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and contrast, gentle woodlands and rugged glaciers. The eruptions in Fimmvörðuháls and Eyjafjallajökull glacier in 2010 were small on Icelandic scale but they had a tremendous effect on most air traffic in the world due to the ashes that got airborne. Your guide will tell you all about the eruption and the consequences it had on the surrounding area and the farmers living underneath the volcano.
Your guide will tell you a lot about the eruption and its consequences for the surroundings and the farmers living underneath the volcano. You will also learn much about the hidden people and trolls that live amongst the people in rocks, mountains and caves all around the country. If you are lucky you can spot them around you in the nature.
But before you continue the rough and adventurous track into Þórsmörk, you visit the remarkable waterfall Seljalandsfoss and walk behind the waterfall.
Then, on the way you cross numerous unbridged rivers, walk into a beautiful narrow gorge and visit the former glacier lagoon by Gígjökull glacier tongue which got swept away during the eruption in 2010. In the evening you cook a mountain barbeque feast with your guide.
Day 5: South Coast – Skógafoss – Dyrhólaey – Vík – Reynisdrangar – Hjörleifshöfði
Now it is time to head back to the main road and travel east along the south coast. You will be driving through the area just below Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Along the way you explore the spectacular waterfall Skógafoss, where you get the opportunity to hike to the top of the waterfall and further up along the river in beautiful surroundings of many smaller waterfalls.
From here it is time to visit the memorable black beaches down by the Atlantic Ocean and the strange rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar Troll cliffs. At the beach we find out who makes the coolest sand castle.
In the afternoon we walk to the top of Cape Hjörleifshöfði, which is located in the middle of the sand stretch Mýrdalssandur. From the top you have fantastic view over the coastline and the highlands with its many glaciers.
Arrival in the afternoon to your warm and cosy accommodation and enjoy a gourmet family meal prepared by your host at our guesthouse.
Day 6: Skaftafell National Park – Glacier Lagoon – Glacier Walk
This day will be dedicated to stunning nature paradise Skaftafell National Park. You visit numerous glacier tongues and go for a family friendly glacier walk with a local guide. If you are lucky then you get to visit an ice cave made by nature itself. You also visit the spectacular glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Since 1950 the glacier tongue has retreated and a lagoon, gradually increasing in area, was created. The edge of the glacier calves into the lagoon and icebergs of different sizes are created. The lagoon is the deepest lake in Iceland.
It is unforgettable have a boat tour around the natural ice sculptures and the blue green colour of the ice. You might also see the occasional seal swim around or relaxing on one of the icebergs. A number of adventure films have been shot at Jökulsárlón, including Beowulf, Tomb Raider, two James Bond movies and Batman Begins.
On our way back to our guesthouse you walk around the mysterious Dverghamrar cliffs and see the dwelling place of some hidden people. In the evening we will have a fare-well dinner at our guesthouse. Down by the river we will create a bonfire, enjoy the evening at the fire and even take out the songbooks!
