The highlights of the tour is Lúdentarborgir crater row - Cave Lofthellir. We visit Lofthellir lava cave and the weird world of ice and darkness and the underground will be explored.
Our destination is a cave that boasts the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in an Icelandic lava cave.
Travel season: All year.
Departures: Monday - friday from Reykjavík or daily from Akureyri and Mývatn.
Duration- Summer 2016: approx. 10-12 hours from Reykjavík, 8-9 hours from Akureyri or 4-5 hours from Mývatn.
Duration - Winter 2015 - 2016: approx. 12 hours from Reykjavík, approx. 9 hours from Akureyri or 5-6 hours from Mývatn.

Flight in the morning from Reykjavík to Akureyri, where you meet your guide.
We drive straight to Lake Mývatn and from there along the unique volcano Hverfell, through the crater row of Lúdentarborgir to the roots of Mt. Hvannfell.
After a 20-minute walk across a lava field which is adorned by endless ropey lava, we reach the Lofthellir Lava Cave. During winter this hike takes about 40 minutes on special snow shoes.
At least one hour is spent inside the cave, observing this unbelievable natural phenomenon.
We make a short stop in the village of Reykjahlíð by Lake Mývatn before returning to Akureyri for your flight back to Reykjavík.
We recommend you bring with you:
- Waterproof clothes
- Good walking shoes
- Water bottle
Note that this tour is not suitable for young children, people with claustrophobia or people that are not in reasonable physical condition. There is ice and water on the floor of the cave and the temperature inside the cave is around 0°C.
